Papua New Guinea, the second largest country in Oceania, is located in Melanesia and occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea along with several neighboring archipelagos. It shares a border with Indonesia. Home to over 6.6 million people, its official languages are Tok Pisin, English, and Hiri Motu. The capital is Port Moresby, and the currency is the kina. The country gained independence in 1975. Thanks to its equatorial climate, Papua New Guinea welcomes visitors year-round, though the dry season from May to October is considered the best time to visit. Mount Wilhelm and its active volcanoes attract nature enthusiasts from around the world.
