New Caledonia, located in the western Pacific Ocean, is a French overseas territory in Melanesia, about 1,400 km from Australia. It comprises the main island of Grande Terre, along with the smaller Loyalty Islands and Île des Pins. Nouméa, the capital, sits on the southern tip of Grande Terre. Home to around 279,000 people—primarily Melanesians and Europeans—the territory enjoys a tropical climate with distinct rainy seasons. The best time to visit is from May to September, when temperatures are pleasant and humidity remains moderate.
